NEBB Announces Procedural Standards for Building Envelope Testing.

bigstock_Corporate_Buildings_In_Perspec_1075141_640X480The National Environmental Balancing Bureau (NEBB) is excited to announce their latest publication: Procedural Standards for Building envelope Testing. This publication will be available on our website in March 2012.
Building Envelope Testing is NEBB’s newest discipline and addresses a distinct need within our industry; the ability to test and quantitatively report the performance of the air-tightness of today’s building enclosures. Two procedures are provided for the practitioner to follow in testing the integrity of the enclosure: A Blower-Door Test Method and a Building HVAC System Test Method.
The Procedural Standard defines the requirements for certification of the firm and for certification of the individual professional. Additionally, the publication identifies the required instrumentation and equipment to properly perform the associated tests and the accuracy, range, resolution and calibration requirements of the instruments and equipment. Reporting requirements are also identified.
The Procedural Standard defines the required procedures for both test methods and the necessary statistical analysis to be performed on the test measurements.
The publication also includes a suggested specification for use by the design professional, necessary reference and referenced publications appendix and an appendix which includes associated engineering tables, formulae and working examples of the required statistical analysis for these test procedures.
NEBB is a not-for-profit organization which was founded in 1971 to:
• Develop standards, procedures and programs for the performance of building environmental systems,
• Promote advancement of the industry through technical training and development,
• Operate programs to certify firms and certify professionals who meet and maintain NEBB standards with integrity.
NEBB is premier international association of certifying firms that perform testing, adjusting and balancing of heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems in addition to building systems commissioning and cleanroom certification. In addition to certifying firms, NEBB is the leading source of industry information providing industry standards, publications, text books, study courses and newsletters. NEBB establishes and maintains standards, proce¬dures, and specifications for work in its various disciplines, which include:
• Testing-Adjusting-Balancing (TAB) -- Air and Hydronic Systems
• Sound & Vibration Measurement (S&V)
• Cleanroom Performance Testing (CPT)
• Building Systems Commissioning (BSC)
• Fume Hood Performance Testing (FHT)
• Retro-Commissioning (RCX)
• Building Envelope Testing (BET)
Each discipline is anchored by a NEBB Procedural Standards manual that provides guidelines for work to be performed. NEBB also has created technical manuals, training materials and programs, and seminars to enhance and support each discipline.
NEBB certifies firms that meet certain criteria, ensuring strict conformance to its high standards and procedures. Among other requirements, NEBB Certified BET Firms must document a record of responsible performance, own a complete set of instruments and equipment required for the sophisticated techniques and procedures necessary to take and report building envelope testing performance and have a NEBB Certified BET Professional as a full-time employee.
NEBB also establishes professional qualifications for the supervision and performance of work in its various disciplines. NEBB Certified BET Professionals must have extensive experience, and they must pass appropriate written examinations and demonstrate certain practical working knowledge and proficiency in the use of instruments required for the various disciplines.
In addition, the firm's NEBB Certified BET Professional renews his or her certification. Among other requirements, the Certified Professional must keep abreast of developments in their discipline by successfully completing continuing education requirements annually.
