Requirements for Certification in Retro-Commissioning

Firms interested in the Retro-Commissioning program should take note that certification in both TAB and Building Systems Commissioning is a mandatory program requirement.

Retro-Commissioning Certification Requirements for a Firm 

In order to become NEBB-certified in Retro-Commissioning, a firm must: 

§       Be a NEBB-certified firm in both TAB AND in Building Systems Commissioning.

§       Enjoy a reputation for integrity and responsible performance.  

§       Be affiliated and in good standing with a local NEBB Chapter.

§       Possess the various instruments and equipment which are required; the local NEBB Chapter must visually confirm compliance.

§       Confirm in writing that it will conform to the NEBB guidelines for the calibration and maintenance of the instruments and equipment required.

§       Possess the current NEBB Procedural Standards for Retro-Commissioning.

§       Designate in writing one or more supervisors who will represent the firm and be responsible for the supervision of retro-commissioning work.  The supervisor must meet the following minimum qualifications:  

Retro-Commissioning Qualification Requirements for a Supervisor 

§       Be employed by a NEBB certified firm on a full time basis and be a NEBB Qualified TAB Supervisor AND a NEBB Qualified BSC Supervisor.   

§       Demonstrate knowledge of Retro-Commissioning by passing the appropriate written and practical NEBB examinations.

§       Hold a management position in the firm, be able to represent the firm on retro-commissioning matters, and have a reputation of integrity with consultants and awarding authorities.

§       Meet all of the conditions in either one of the following categories (note that all requirements cannot be conducted concurrently):  

1.      Hold a Bachelor of Science Engineering degree from an accredited college or university with at least two (2) years of Supervisory experience in HVAC installation or HVAC design work, or

2.      Hold an Associates Degree in Engineering Technology from and accredited institution with at least four (4) years of supervisory experience in TAB, BSC or Design experience in the HVAC industry, or

3.      Have a minimum of four (4) years of TAB, BSC or Design experience, and have a minimum of  four (4) years of supervisory experience in TAB or BSC in the HVAC industry, or

4.      Have a minimum of four (4) years of HVAC related experience (which could include accredited apprenticeship), and have a minimum of two (2) years of TAB experience.  In addition, a minimum of four (4) years of supervisory experience in TAB or BSC in the HVAC industry.  Ten years total.  

§     Attendance at the NEBB RCx Seminar is NOT a requirement.  Any candidate can apply to take the Retro-Commissioning written & practical exams.  It is strongly encouraged that the candidate attend the seminar prior to taking the exams due to the training nature of this seminar.
