Retro-Commissioning Certification Requirements

NEBB’s Technical Retro-Commissioning for Existing Buildings program provides certification of firms and individuals that meet the criteria established by NEBB.

 

Firms interested in NEBB's Technical Retro-Commissioning for Existing Buildings (RCX-EB) program must meet the requirements outlined below.

 

Technical Retro-Commissioning Certification Requirements for a Firm

In order to become NEBB Certified in Retro-Commissioning, a firm must:

  • Have operated for a minimum period of 12 months continuously as an engineering firm; BSC firm; mechanical contractor; plumbing contractor; fire protection contractor; electrical contractor; testing contractor; or an adjusting and balancing (TAB) contractor.
  • Enjoy a reputation for integrity and responsible performance. Six letters of endorsement from building owners or contract awarding authorities in the firm's area are required. Firms who are already NEBB Certified in another discipline will not need these letters.
  • Have at least one NEBB Certified RCX-EB Professional on staff.
  • Be affiliated and in good standing with a local NEBB Chapter.
  • Possess the various instruments and equipment which are required; the local NEBB Chapter must visually confirm compliance.
  • Confirm in writing that it will conform to the NEBB guidelines for the calibration and maintenance of the instruments and equipment required.
  • Possess the current NEBB Procedural Standards for Technical Retro-Commissioning of Existing Buildings.
  • Designate in writing the Designated Certified Professionals who will represent the firm and be responsible for the supervision of retro-commissioning work.

 


 

Technical Retro-Commissioning Certification Requirements for Certified Professionals

In order to become a NEBB Technical Retro-Commissioning Certified Professional, persons must meet the following minimum qualifications:

 
Have experience equal to either of the following:

 

A. Hold a Bachelor of Science Engineering degree from an accredited college or university, and have at least two years of supervisory experience in building systems design, building systems installation, Building Systems Commissioning, Building Systems Testing, or TAB.

 

B. Hold an Associate's Degree in Engineering Technology from and accredited institution, and have at least four years of experience in performing Building Systems Design, or Building Systems installation, or BSC, or Systems Testing, or TAB, and have two years of supervisory experience in building systems design, building systems installation, Building Systems Commissioning, Building Systems Testing, or TAB, six years of total experience.

 

C. Have a minimum of four years of experience in performing Building Systems Design, or Building Systems installation or BSC, or Systems Testing, or TAB, and have four years of supervisory experience in Building Systems Design, or Building Systems installation or BSC, or Systems Testing, or TAB, eight years of total experience.

 

D. Have a minimum of four years of Building Systems design or installation related experience (which could include accredited apprenticeship), and have a minimum of two years of experience in performing Building Systems Design, or Building Systems installation or Building Systems Commissioning, or Systems Testing, or TAB, and have in addition, a minimum of four years of supervisory experience in Building Systems Design, or Building Systems installation or BSC, or Systems Testing, or TAB, ten years of total experience.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of HVAC Building Systems Commissioning by passing NEBB BSC Technical and Procedural Standards exams.
