BSC Requirements

NEBB's Building Systems Commissioning Program provides certification of firms and individuals that meet criteria established by NEBB.
 
 

Building Systems Commissioning Certification Requirements for a Firm

In order to become NEBB Certified in Building Systems Commissioning, a firm must:
  • Have operated for a minimum period of 12 months continuously with full-time employees as an installing piping contractor; installing sheet metal contractor; installing mechanical contractor; testing, adjusting and balancing (TAB) contractor; or contractor engineering firm engaged in building systems commissioning (BSC work)
  • Enjoy a reputation for responsible performance. Six letters of endorsement from building owners or awarding authorities in the firm's area are required.
  • Be a member in good standing of a local NEBB Chapter.
  • Have access to the BSC instruments which are required for NEBB certification in Building Systems Commissioning.
  • Possess the current NEBB Standards for Building Systems Commissioning.
  • Designate in writing one or more (certified professionals) who will represent the firm and be responsible for the administration of building systems commissioning.

Building Systems Commissioning Certified Professional Requirements

In order to become a NEBB Building Systems Commissioning Certified Professional, persons must meet the following minimum qualifications:
  • Be employed by a certified firm or candidate firm on a full time basis.
  • Hold a management position in the firm, be able to represent the firm on all building systems commissioning matters, and have a reputation of integrity with building owners, consultants and awarding authorities.
  • Have experience equal to either of the following:
    • Hold a Bachelor of Science Engineering degree from an accredited college or university with at least two (2) years of supervisory experience in HVAC installation or HVAC design work, or
    • Hold an Associate's Degree in Engineering Technology from and accredited institution with at least four (4) years of supervisory experience in TAB/BSC or in the HVAC industry, or
    • Have a minimum of four (4) years of TAB/BSC, or Design experience, and have a minimum of four (4) years of supervisory experience in TAB/BSC or in the HVAC industry, or
    • Have a minimum of four (4) years of HVAC related experience (which could include accredited apprenticeship),and have a minimum of two (2) years of TAB/BSC experience. In addition, a minimum of four (4) years of supervisory experience in TAB/BSC or in the HVAC industry. Ten years total.
    • Applicants must be a designated candidate certified professional of a NEBB – certified or candidate firm in good standing with a local chapter, as well as meeting all other criteria for qualification to be eligible to take the required NEBB TAB written examinations. They must pass the appropriate TAB written examinations (not the practical). See the section on TAB Written and Practical Examinations for details.
    • Demonstrate knowledge in the category or categories of building systems commissioning for which the firm is applying for certification by passing appropriate building systems commissioning examinations.
